Alexandria Tlmee-TrlDune Wednesday, May 28, 2003 PAGE 7 Embry named Lilly Scholar 1 111 A JUL by MARY JANE FUSCHETTO Andrew Embry tried to act calm when he got the phone call at work notifying him that he had won the prestigious Lilly Scholarship that covers full tuition, fees and partial book expenses at any Indiana college. "Oh man, I was real excited," Embry recalled. "But Leslie White (of the Madison County Community Foundation) called me at work and I knew I had to stay calm. But after I got off the phone I was so pumped." Emory's first thought was to call his parents, Jane Ann and Bo Embry, who happen to own Strong's Market where Embry works. "I think the only people more excited than me were my parents.

My mom was real happy." But reality finally set in at the end of that phone caJ. True to the work ethic that may have helped earn him the Lilly Scholarship, Embry laughed, They still made me finish out the rest of my shift at the store." Embry also laughs that all he wanted to do to celebrate was enjoy a dinner of Hamburger Helper Cheeseburger Macaroni. "I love that stuff, but my mom still says she won't make it for me." Word of the scholarship soon spread throughout the market. "Everyone at the store was really happy for me too. There were a few hugs and lots of teary-eyed congratulations.

IVe known all the people who work at the store for so long that I'm kind of like their kid too. They were aR real happy for me." Embry spent the evening calling his eighth grade brother, Zach, his grandparents, aunts, uncles and friends. But he admits it wasn't until the next day that the magnitude of his award hit him. "I woke up and thought, 'Oh Lord, that's a lot of money." Embry brought an impressive list of credentials to the Lilly applica- Andrew Embry tkn process. He is a class valedictorian, president of the AMHS National Honor Society, vice-president of Student Council, was Homecoming King, participated In Quiz Bowl and Spell Bowl competitions, and played varsity football for four years, serving as captain his senior year.

The scholarship money came at an appropriate time for Embry, who planned on attending Bad State University to major in education, but had recently decided to change his major to Business management. Though room and board are not covered by the Lilly Scholarship, Embry plans to keep working in the summers and hopes to possibly receive more financial aid from Butler. "I'm not complaining that they don't cover housing. Money is money and I'm really thankful for the scholarship." Embry feels Butler's strong alumni network and smaller class size will be beneficial to his studies. "I'm concerned now that I need to keep meeting those 3.5 standards to keep the scholarship, but I work hard.

I'll deal with it. I'm excited. I'm pumped. I'm ready." AMS eighth graders visit Washington, D.C.
